Lib Dems Step Up for National Kidney Day

To mark National Kidney Day, Thursday 13th March, Bridgwater, North Petherton, Highbridge & Burnham-On-Sea Lib Dems are stepping up to raise awareness about kidney disease, early detection, and the importance of organ health. Leading the charge is Laura, a dedicated member of the local executive committee and parish councillor, who has been living on dialysis for more than seven years after a sudden and life-altering diagnosis.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is often referred to as a “silent disease” because symptoms may not appear until significant damage has already occurred. For many, like Laura, the diagnosis comes unexpectedly, forcing them into urgent and intensive treatment.
“I never expected to end up on dialysis, but here I am, more than seven years later, determined to turn my experience into something positive,” says Laura. “National Kidney Day is about making sure others don’t have to ‘crash land’ like I did. Awareness, early detection, and education can save lives.”
The Bridgwater & West Somerset Lib Dems are urging individuals to take charge of their kidney health by getting tested if they are at risk and supporting initiatives that improve patient care and research. Early detection and proactive healthcare can significantly impact treatment outcomes and save lives.
Backing this vital cause is Bill Revans, Unitary Councillor and Lib Dem Leader of Somerset Council, who survived kidney cancer, when his diagnosis was reported by the press back in 2022. He strongly supports Laura’s advocacy for improved awareness, early detection, and the critical importance of kidney health. Town Councillors Lesley Millard and Ross Baker from Highbridge & Burnham-On-Sea are also joining the campaign, emphasizing the need for better early detection and treatment options.
