In a decisive move at the Full Town Council meeting on January 23, 2025, Labour councillors in Bridgwater voted to approve a substantial increase in council tax for the upcoming financial year.

The decision, which took place at Bridgwater Town Hall, has sparked discussions across the town as residents prepare for the financial blow.

The town council's precept (tax income revenue) will rise dramatically from £3,071,221 in 2024/25 to £4,299,101 for 2025/26. This represents a significant increase in the contributions expected from local taxpayers.

For residents in an average Band D property, the council tax rate will jump from £299.33 in 2024/25 to £411.06 in 2025/26. This represents an annual increase of £111.73, or approximately 37%.

The tax hike is set to take effect at the start of the 2025/26 financial year. As residents adjust to the news, discussions about the implications of the decision are expected to continue.
